A root canal is a treatment intended to help save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. When a tooth is cracked, it exposes the sensitive nerve tissue inside the tooth, causing extreme discomfort. The condition requires endodontic therapy, also known as a root canal. At Englewood Dentistry, this oral surgery removes the damaged enamel and nerves, cleans the tissues inside the tooth, and then seals the tooth with a crown to prevent further damage. Without proper endodontic care, patients can face infections and, eventually, tooth loss.
Your tooth’s pulp and the nerve can become infected for various reasons, including tooth decay, deep fillings, large cavities, fractures, chips, or trauma. When this happens, bacteria can enter the pulp cavity and cause an infection inside the tooth that can be painful. If the condition isn’t treated, it can spread to the bone around the tooth. A root canal can treat the infection and save your tooth by removing the diseased tissue and nerves from the inside of the tooth. After your root canal, we will place a dental crown to protect your tooth and restore it to full function.
In addition to saving your tooth from possible extraction, it can prevent the need for dental implants or bridges and keep the neighboring teeth from shifting out of place. If you are experiencing symptoms of a tooth infection, such as pain when chewing, temperature sensitivities to hot or cold foods and drinks, facial swelling, or a bad taste in your mouth, call your dentist immediately to schedule an appointment so you can undergo treatment before your discomfort worsens.
During a root canal, your dentist will remove damaged and decayed tissue from your tooth’s center or pulp. Then, the inside of your empty tooth will be carefully cleaned and disinfected before a temporary filling is placed. Finally, a permanent dental crown will be placed to help restore function to your smile.
Once your treatment has been completed and you’re no longer experiencing pain, you can return to your routine! Just remember to practice good oral hygiene habits at home, including brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time with a soft-bristled toothbrush and flossing once daily.
